Local Election Final Results

ROYSTON, GEORGIA – Franklin, Hart and Madison Counties have a brand new congressman for the first time since 2007.  Gainesville Attorney Doug Collins easily defeated Democrat Jody Cooley to take the newly redrawn 9th Congressional District Seat – he’ll be sworn in at the US Capital in Washington D.C. at the first of the year.

The state house delegation for Franklin Hart and Madison will stay the same in the upcoming legislative session as Representatives Alan Powell and Tom McCall return to the Gold Dome.

In the Senate, Frank Ginn and John Wilkinson will represent Franklin and Madison Counties in the state senate but Hart County has moved into an entirely different senate district that stretches all the way down to Augusta. Hart voters will now be represented by Senator Bill Jackson of Colombia County.

Independent Candidate Stephanie Burton avoided a runoff in a three woman race for Board of Education Post 1 in Hart County – She finished with 51 percent of the vote unseating incumbent Brenda Jordan. Burton will be joined on the Board by republican Greg Fleming who held of a Democratic Challenge from Brenda Herring in Post 3 while Post 5’s Angela McGee easily won re-election on Tuesday.

DeWitt Bond easily held on to his District 2 seat on the Madison County Commission winning by a 3 to one margin. In the Madison County Sheriff’s race the margins weren’t quite as big but the result was the same – Incumbent Sheriff Kip Thomas keeps his badge with a  2 to one margin in the final vote

There is no doubt whatsoever who the folks in Franklin County want as Sheriff – 81% of voters chose to keep Stevie Thomas in office for another term.
