Bohemians and Rovers set for big derby clash

Soccer: Airtricity league premier division previews

By Dave Donnelly

Bohemians host Shamrock Rovers on Monday night as the second Dublin Derby of the season pits last season’s top two against one another.

Rovers returned to the top of the table – on goal difference – without kicking a ball as Sligo Rovers fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Drogheda United.

The Hoops missed a chance to move top the previous day as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Finn Harps, Swords man Adam Foley cancelling out Aaron Greene’s early opener.

The clubs discovered their European opponents this week with Rovers to face Slovan Bratislava of Slovakia in the Champions League first round, with Swiss champions Young Boys awaiting if they win.

Bohs face a trip to Reykjavik to face Stjarnan, whom Rovers beat home and away four seasons ago, in the Conference League, with the winner set to face

Before they can begin to think about either Europe of the derby, however, Friday night’s league action sees Bohs host high-flying Drogheda and Rovers travel to a resurgent Waterford.

Third-placed St Patrick’s Athletic could go top following their home clash with Sligo Rovers, who are level with Rovers in first, before hosting Finn Harps on Monday night.

In the First Division, league leaders Shelbourne travel to bottom side Wexford as they look to build on their substantial eight-point lead.

Second-placed UCD face a tough trip to face Bray Wanderers, while Cabinteely will look to follow up their impressive win at Cork City as they travel to face ex-City boss John Caulfield and Galway United.
