Oisín aims for World Surf Games and Tokyo Olympics

A Dublin-based engineer with dreams to surf at the World Surf Games and at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics has launched a GoFundMe to help him get to El Salvador and then onto Tokyo.

Oisín Campbell, 26, an engineer now working in Dublin, grew up in the seaside town of Kilkee in the county of Clare, right on the Atlantic Ocean and part of the Wild Atlantic Way. That is where he built his connection with the sea and began surfing from a young age.

Oisín moved to Derry when he was 14 and continued to surf the coast of Donegal  growing up.

Last year, Oisín qualified for the Irish surf team who were due to compete at the world games that were postponed due to the global pandemic.

This year, Oisín has the chance to represent Ireland in El Salvador where 109 nations will be competing between 29th May – 6th June. With a successful finish in this competition, Oisín could be offered a spot to compete at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics in July.

Speaking to the Dublin Gazette this week, Oisín said that he is very excited at the prospect of competing in the International Surf Association (ISA) World Games in El Salvador.

“I’m actually a second-generation surfer, my dad and brother surf as well. We’re going over to El Salvador with the Irish team on Friday May 21 so it’s just sorting the last few things to get over there. Going to the Olympics in Tokyo would be an amazing experience, I’m excited to go to the World Surf Games and hopefully if I do well enough to go to Tokyo in July,” explained Oisín.

The World Surf Games will see Oisín and Team Ireland team face off against 109 other nations with 300 male surfers and 300 female surfers taking part in the week-long competition.

This trip is a self-funded journey so Oisín is hoping the GoFundMe page will help assist the costs of flights to and from El Salvador, luggage, surfboards, insurance, accommodation, covid tests and transport.

During the Covid-19 pandemic Oisín has kept busy with his surfing and working as a civil engineer for Murphy Ireland on a project in Intel. However, like many, Oisín has found it hard being away from his family in Kilkee.

“The travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic were a killer because I couldn’t travel up to Kilkee in Clare, I didn’t really get to go home although I did get up to Derry for a bit of surfing off the coast. I’ve gotten in as much surfing as I can,” said Oisín.

At the moment the GoFundMe set up by Oisín has smashed its target of €5,000 and Oisín says that any extra funding over from the trip will be donated to a charitable foundation.
