Peamount drawn home to Limerick

FAI Women’s cup quarter-final preview

Holders Peamount United will face Treaty United in the quarter-finals of the 2021 FAI Cup following the draw on Tuesday afternoon.

Peamount, who were defeated 5-1 by Spartak Subotica in their Champions League tie yesterday, will kick off their campaign at home to the Limerick side.

Last season’s beaten finalists, Cork City, face a trip to Shelbourne where they will be reunited with the Reds’ top scorer Saoirse Noonan following her winter move east.

Wexford Youths will host Athlone Town in the final game of the last eight as they look to regain the trophy they’ve won twice in the past three seasons.

And DLR Waves’ reward for defeating Bohemians in the first round is a tough trip to face Galway at Eamonn Deacy Park in a repeat of last season’s quarter-final tie.

The only game of the first round – just nine teams entered this year as the non-league sides have been excluded – saw Waves run out comfortable 3-0 winners at Dalymount Park.

Goals from Carla McManus, Rachel Doyle and substitute Avril Brierley saw Graham Kelly’s side to a deserved win in front of a capacity crowd.

A rare Friday night WNL game served up plenty of entertainment but the first half hour was noticeably tense until McManus broke the deadlock.

The striker nipped in at the near post ahead of Bohs keeper Courtney Maguire to nudge home Jetta Berrill’s cross, following good work in midfield from Nadine Clare.

Waves had chances to add to their tally but they doubled the lead midway through the second half through vice-captain Doyle.  And Brierley added the third deep in injury time as her shot from a tight angle took a nick off a Bohs defender and looped over the helpless Maguire.

Meanwhile, Peamount’s European adventure will conclude on Saturday as they face Georgian champions FC Nike Tbilisi in Enschede.

A four-goal haul from the magnificent Tijana Filipovic, and one from Alice Kusi, saw Serbian champions Spartak Subotica set up a knockout tie with FC Twente of the Netherlands.

2021 FAI Cup quarter-final draw: Galway v DLR Waves; Shelbourne v Cork City; Peamount United v Treaty United; Wexford Youths v Athlone Town

Ties to be played 4/5 September.
